No more school, no more books
No more school, no more books Well, today was my last day of class as an undergrad. Technically the last day of class is tomorrow, but I only have 7.28 (molecular biology) tomorrow, and Professor Bell announced that there would be no new material, just a test review led by the TAs. I dont believe in test reviews (I think Ive attended a grand total of one since the end of my freshman year), so Im not going tomorrow. Which means that 7.27 (human disease) and 9.24 (diseases of the nervous system) classes today were the last MIT classes Ill ever attend. I am trying really hard to scrounge up some sad, much as Im sure a lot of you high school seniors are. On one hand, Ive had a super four years here and I love MIT to death. On the other hand, no school until September for this kid! (I have a feeling part of my inability to dig up some tears is due to the fact that Ill be living on the MIT campus next year and hanging out with a lot of my friends. So what is there to be sad for?) Today at the end of 7.27 lecture, one of the students asked Professor Housman to talk a little about his career and the things hes discovered. He was extraordinarily modest this morning he was all oh, Ive been fortunate to work on a few diseases and discover some stuff, but as a cursory Google Scholar search proves, hes been involved in fundamental discoveries on just about any disease you can shake a stick at Huntingtons disease, AML, schizophrenia, myotonic dystrophy, bipolar disorder, fragile X, thalessemia, Wilms tumor, cardiovascular disease, neurofibromatosis type I, melanoma, breast cancer if we know something about the molecular basis of a disease, odds are that Professor Housmans had his hand in it. And the cool thing is that this distinguished researcher a really enthusiastic lecturer, and he usually gets a rating of 6 (out of 7) on the undergraduate subject evaluations. (And of course, we had no idea that he was so distinguished. You get a little numb to professors being famous after a while I mean, pretty much all of them are famous. Whoop de doo.) But at the end of his extraordinarily modest speech about his accomplishments, he said that he considers his most important job to be educating us to be scientists and doctors. And I think he was even a little misty-eyed as he said it. Cute. Its definitely the time of year for end-of-the-term dinners, and Ive been to two in the past week or so. Last Monday, Dr. Byrne, who teaches 9.24, invited the class to dinner at his home, Gray House, with him and his wife. You know, his wife, the MIT president. We got to run all around the house and meet their dog, then eat a very pleasant and delicious dinner with President Hockfield and Dr. Byrne. Dr. Byrne isnt actually an MIT faculty member hes a neurologist at Mass General Hospital but Ive learned so much in the class because hes brought in lots of experts from the medical school to guest-lecture about all the nervous system diseases. (He also seems to have taken a rather enthusiastic interest in mentoring the course 9 premeds. So if youre premed, take the classes Dr. Byrne teaches! He will hook you up for med school.) Not entirely related, but a picture of President Hockfield and Dr. Byrne with the cheerleading squad is here. Just in case you wanted to see. I went to a second end-of-term dinner last night at the home of John Durant, Adams STS.014 (Science Communication) lecturer. Even though I was not actually in the class, I went along because Adam is rude and/or Professor Durant is very gracious. We went out to his lovely home in Belmont and ate a very nice meal (complete with fresh pie!) that he actually cooked himself. Now, I didnt know anything about Professor Durant before I went. But I made an off-hand comment about Stephen Jay Gould, one of my biology idols, after dinner and it turns out that Professor Durant knew him personally. And he knows Richard Dawkins, too. And he knew them well enough that he actually arranged a debate between the two of them several years ago. I almost died of happiness, and thats all Im going to say about that. Just three final exams between me and dancing at graduation with a diploma in each hand!

Overview On March 13, 1964 thirty-eight neighbors failed to intervene when a 28 year old woman named Katherine ââ¬Å"Kittyâ⬠Genovese was being murdered behind the building. This incident proposed the experiment of the ââ¬Å"Bystander Effectâ⬠by Bibb Latanà © and John Darley, among other scientists, to find out why thirty-eight people had not done anything to help during this situation (Latanà © Darley, 1969). Wal-Mart gives shoppers the chance to go into their stores and purchase close to anything they can think of at lower prices then Wal-Martââ¬â¢s competition. When all is said, Wal-Mart improves the lives of everyone in a community because it allows consumers to buy goods for relatively cheap prices. Unlike any other retailers, Wal-Mart employs people for jobs not careers. There is a possibility to climb the ladder within the company, but working at Wal-Mart doesnââ¬â¢t really jump-start to any other job opportunities. But the fact is that Wal-Mart does provide a vast amount of people. The number of different departments and employees that are required to run one Wal-Mart store hires a great number of people. With the amount of people needed for each section and subsection at these stores, Wal-Mart has the ability to give many people jobs. Wal-Mart has been one of the most successful anti-poverty programmers in America. It provides entry-level jobs that unskilled workers badly want ââ¬â there are often five or 10 applicants for each positionâ⬠(Urbach). Wal-Mart is also beneficial with giving high number of jobs because most of the jobs that they are hiring donââ¬â¢t need a high school or college degree. For areas with high number of people who donââ¬â¢t have diplomas, Wal-Mart gives the opportunity to them by supplying them a steady supply of money. These are unskilled workers that arenââ¬â¢t exactly looking for job progression, but are looking for any job they can get and keep. Itââ¬â¢s the perfect combination of a company that needs to hire a great amount of people, and the kinds of workers that donââ¬â¢t really have many other options. Wal-Martââ¬â¢s geographic position is very helpful and convenient to many communities. These mega-stores may seem like they just follow whichever area is large enough to hold their enormous square footage, but actually they are positioned in just the right place. The fact that most are within short driving distance to other supermarkets, makes it worth for the consumers to go to Wal-Mart first, see what they have, and then from there go to the other stores. People who shop at Wal-Mart, trust that they will be able to find most if not all of their shopping list. Even if it is farther than another store, people are willing to go the extra mile or two to get the savings they would not be able to find anywhere else. Wal-Martââ¬â¢s slogan sums up how their customers shop and enjoy the savings, ââ¬Å"Save money, live betterâ⬠. I couldnââ¬â¢t agree more. With people being able to save money, communityââ¬â¢s benefit immensely. Especially low-income communities, Wal-Mart is good because it gets money into the citizenââ¬â¢s pockets and encourages them to spend more than they would or could have before. ââ¬Å"This then allows them to have some money to invest in productive assets or to buy those other things that will make their lives more comfortable and enjoyableâ⬠(Urbach). Customers of Wal-Mart arenââ¬â¢t just happy because of the deals they get by shopping at those stores. What makes Wal-Mart customers the happiest is knowing that from the money they saved, they have extra to spend on other things. Many nonbelievers against Wal-Mart state that it will shut down small businesses and affect the economy in a negative way. Putting a Wal-Mart in a striving community is a positive. One reason is because it drives up competition. What we strive for as human beings is competition. It is a life essential tool for business. Opposing common belief, ââ¬Å"after a new Wal-Mart is built, other small businesses sprout up nearby and cash in on the new retail trafficâ⬠(Gruss). Studies have shown that other businesses and companies do better and grow when Wal-Mart is in close proximity to them. Critics of Wal-Mart have understandable reasons to question this huge corporation; they donââ¬â¢t want to have to lower their prices to compete with Wal-Martââ¬â¢s. Instead of trying to battle with them, they claim that Wal-Mart is bad for communities and small businesses. But there is proof that small businesses open and flourish once a Wal-Mart is opened. Wal-Martââ¬â¢s drive up competition that encourages people to go to multiple stores to compare to the prices they offer. Wal-Mart has over 1. 2 million employees and more than 3,600 stores nationwide. The fact is that everyone has shopped at Wal-Mart once in there life. Gilgamesh essays The Epic of Gilgamesh was written around 2000 B.C. in the Sumerian language. It was written about the historical king of Uruk in Babylonia who lived about 2700 B.C. It was written in cuneiform on clay tablets which were found in the ruins of the library of Ashurbanipal. One of the most important points of the tablets is that they actually name an author. This is extremely rare in the ancient world. The author, Shin-eqi-unninni, is the oldest author that can be named. Gilgamesh was two-thirds god and one-third human and ruled over Sumer oppressively. He was very arrogant and cocky so because of this, the people cry out to the god Anu to help them. In response, he creates theopposite of Gilgamesh; an equal rival. His name is Enkidu and is first seen running naked with wild animals. He is taken in by some shepards who civilize him so that he can walk into the city. Eventually, Gilgamesh and Enkidu battle but the turnout results in a friendship between the two superpowers. Both Enkidu and Gilgamesh begin to weaken and grow lazy living in the city so Gilgamesh decides to embark upon a great adventure by cutting down all the all of the trees in the great Cedar Forest. To do this, however, they need to defeat Humbaba the terrible who is the Guardian of the great Cedar Forest. But, due to Gilgamesh's fatal flaw of arrogance, he doesn't listen to Enkidu's words of wisdom. This flaw is classic of the hero in an epic. The two set off to defeat Humbaba and succeed in doing so. Just before Gilgamesh beheads the demon, Humbaba curses Enkidu by saying that he will die before Gilgamesh and will "not find peace in in this world." After battling a bull and killing it, Enkidu becomes very sick and after suffering for twelve days, he finally dies. Most people have heard of the possibility of more than one universe from science fiction stories and movies. Far from being an imaginary idea, multiple universes can exist, according to modern physics. However, its one thing to devise a theory about their existence, but quite another to actually detect them. This is something that modern physics is wrestling with, using observations of distant light signals from the Big Bang as data.à What Are Multiple Universes? Just as our universe, with all its stars, galaxies, planets, and other structures exists and can be studied, physicists suspect that other universes filled with matter and space exist in parallel with ours. They may or may not be exactly like ours. Chances are that theyre not. They might have different laws of physics than we do, for example. They dont necessarily intersect with ours, but they may collide with it. Some theorists go so far as to explain that each person has a twin or mirror in the other universes. This is one interpretation of the multiple-universe theory called the many-worlds approach. It says that there are many universes out there. Star Trek fans, for example, will recognize this from such episodes as Mirror Mirror in the original series, Parallels in Next Generation, and others. Theres another interpretation of multiple universes that gets quite complex and is an outgrowth of quantum physics, which is the physics of the very small. It deals with interactions at the level of atoms and subatomic particles (which make up atoms). Basically, quantum physics says that small interactions - called quantum interactions - happen. When they do, they have far-reaching consequences and set up endless possibilities with endless outcomings from those interactions. As an example, imagine that in our universe a person takes a wrong turn on the way to a meeting. They miss the meeting and lose a chance to work on a new project. If they hadnt missed the turn, they would have gone to the meeting and gotten the project. Or, they missed the turn, and the meeting, but met someone else who offered them a better project. there are endless possibilities, and each one (if it happens) spurs endless consequences. In parallel universes, ALL of those actions and reactions and consequences take place, one to each universe.à This implies that there are parallel universes where all possible outcomes are happening simultaneously. Yet, we only observe the action in our own universe. All the other actions, we dont observe, but they are happening in parallel, elsewhere. We dont observe them, but they happen, at least theoretically. Can Multiple Universes Exist? The argument in favor of multiple universes involves many interesting thought experiments. One delves into cosmology (which is the study of the origin and evolution of the universe) and something called the fine-tuning problem.à This says that as we grow to understand the way our universe is constructed, our existence in it grows more precarious. As physicists have examined the way the universe has changed over time since the Bigà Bang, they suspect that had the early conditions of the universe been just a bit different, our universe could have evolved to be inhospitable to life. In fact, if a universe spontaneously came into existence, physicists would expect it to spontaneously collapse or possibly to expand so rapidly that particles never really interact with each other. British physicist, Sir Martin Reese wrote extensively about this idea in his classic book Just Six Numbers: The Deep Forces That Shape the Universe. Multiple Universes and a Creator Using this idea of finely-tuned properties in the universe, some argue for the need of a creator. Tgbe existence of such a being (for which there is no proof), doesnt explain properties of the universe. Physicists would like to understand those properties without invoking a deity of any kind. The easiest solution would just be to say, Well, thats how it is. However, thats not really an explanation. It just represents a remarkable lucky break that a single universe would come into being and that universe would just happen to have the very precise properties needed to develop life. Most physical properties would result in a universe that collapses into nothingness instantly. Or, it continues to exist and expands into a vast sea of nothingness. It isnt just a matter of trying to explain human beings as we happen to exist, but of explaining the very existence of any sort of universe. Another idea, which fits well with quantum physics, says that there is, indeed, a vast number of universes, which with different properties. Within thatà multiverse of universes, some subset of them (including our own) would contain properties that allow them to exist for relatively long periods of time. That means a subset (including our own universe) would have the properties that allow them to form complex chemicals and, ultimately, life. Others would not. And, that would be okay, since quantum physics tells us that all possibilities can exist.à String Theory and Multiple Universes String theoryà (which states that all the different fundamental particles of matter are manifestations of a basic object called a string) has recently begun to support this idea. This is because there is a vast number of possible solutions to string theory. In other words, if string theory is correct then there are still many different ways to construct the universe. String theory presents the idea of extra dimensions at the same that it includes a structure to think about where these other universes could be located. Our universe, which includes four dimensions of spacetime, seems to exist in a universe that may contain as many as 11 total dimensions. That multi-dimensional region is often called the bulk by string theorists. Theres no reason to think that the bulk couldnt contain other universes in addition to our own. So, it is sort of a universe of universes. à Detection is a Problem The question of a multiverses existence is secondary to being able to detect other universes. So far no one has found solid evidence for another universe. That doesnt mean they arent out there. The evidence may be something we havent yet recognized. Or our detectors arent sensitive enough. Eventually, physicists will find a way using solid data to find parallel universes and measure at least some of their properties. By this, I mean learning to understand the psyche of a rebellious 12-year-old or a shy first grader. Every student has his/her own special needs and a teacher is duty bound to identify those needs. Understanding young children do not happen through listening to lectures or analyzing books on child psychology. It can only be brought about by experience and patience while interacting on a one to one basis with the children you are working with. I intend to work towards building the confidence of my pupils, first of all in themselves, so they will always know that no goal is unreachable, and secondly in me so they will positively respond to my suggestions and advice. During my years as a student, I have always responded well to only those teachers who, apart from being excellent in their teaching, were also genuine. Many teachers undermine the perceptive powers of their students assumi ng that they can get away with just cursory replies to queries and in doing so unconsciously lose respect and faith of the children. Genuinely being interested and devoted to all of my students is my primary objective. In addition to earning their trust, I will also be able to easily make them pay heed to me. After all, it is easier to control a class with love than with a rod. A rod can indeed quite a noisy class but cannot make the minds attune to what is being taught. A holistic approach instead of a completely academic approach is required to reach out to the students, especially at such an impressionable age. Further, students at all levels have considerable attention deficit (not the syndrome) and at the elementary level more so. To keep them engaged throughout an entire period is quite a challenge in itself. In order to accomplish that I will put into practice a thoroughly interactive and imaginative approach.

While children develop at their own pace, every child should do certain tasks by a certain age and its impossible to tell exactly when a child will learn a given skill. Theres more to tracking a childââ¬â¢s development than logging height and weight as the process ofdevelopingfrom a baby into a child requires the achievement of manymilestonesin language, physical, social, emotional development, etc. Hence, developmental milestones give parents a general idea of the changes to expect as the child gets older. This book is about your four year old child. In the course of this year children are moving out of babyhood into childhood. They have rich imaginations, they may have strong fears, they love to play and they enjoy physical activity. They are beginning to be more comfortable spending some time away from their usual comfort zone. Sometimes they are timid about trying new things. Of course all four year olds are different and they may develop at different rates. Indeed, sometimes itââ¬â¢s a case of two steps forward and one step back, with children appearing to forget the things they once knew. Although it is difficult to define ââ¬Ënormalââ¬â¢ development, there are some milestonesthat children can be expected to achieve. However, if you are worried about your childs development, or if they cant do things that they used to do for more than a short time, it is important to see a pediatrician or child health nurse. If there is anything wrong, getting in early will help. Otherwise it is good to know that your child is developing normally in his or her own special way. It is of utmost importance to remember that the milestones are approximate, not absolute. Each child develops at his or her own pace, and some stages may occur earlier or later this guidebook allows explanations of variations physical, cognitive, emotional, and social developmental milestones to be expected during the first year of life to gain insight into observing in children today and to preview what to look forward to in the years ahead. Chapter One: Cognitive Milestone Most children this age can speak clearly using more complex sentences and enjoy singing, rhyming, and making up words. They are energetic, silly, and, at times, rowdy and obnoxious. Children this age can also count ten or more objects and correctly name at least four colors and three shapes. They are able to recognize some letters and possibly write his or her name. Cognitive development, or the process of growth in intellectual abilities such as thinking, reasoning and understanding, is a major component of early childhood. According to the World Health Organization, early childhood is the most important phase of development throughout the lifespan. So games for cognitive development during early childhood are an effective way to help kids grow intellectually. Categorizing is the type of games that encourage sorting, matching and classifying and are excellent for cognitive development. Identifying colors is a necessary skill that people use every dayââ¬âfor choosing which clothes to wear, reading signs, following traffic signalsand describing the surrounding world. This activity provides an interactive, colorful way for your preschooler to practice color recognition. It introduces children to this bright new world of colors using ordinary household objects such as buttons to group these objects into different sections and learn to recognize colors using a homemade egg carton sorter. They often stutter and stumble when trying to express themselves. It can be exhausting to listen and explain things to your child but exciting to be able to share in their rich imaginings. They love to be read to and may want the same book over and over again. Four year olds get across what they want to say in most situations. Some four year olds speak very clearly, while others still use some ââ¬Ëbaby talkââ¬â¢. Some may stumble over some words but this will probably clear up by itself within the year. The average four year old can understand 1000 or more words. Four year olds can usually understand ââ¬Ëplaceââ¬â¢ words such as ââ¬â under, on, beside, back, over. Four year olds ask questions beginning with ââ¬ËWhatââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËWhoââ¬â¢, ââ¬ËWhereââ¬â¢ and ââ¬ËWhyââ¬â¢? They can talk about what happened yesterday and about tomorrow. You can build on what your four year old says to you. Donââ¬â¢t correct their unsuccessful efforts at words but respond positively with the correct word in your reply. Try to be patient. Ask them questions. Some children become such enthusiastic talkers that their constant ââ¬Ëwhatââ¬â¢ can become irritating for parents. Most will respond to your request for you to have some quiet time from their questions ââ¬â at least for a few minutes! They use logical reasoning to solve everyday problems, and can effectively use language to compare and describe objects and shapes. They can count to ten, recognize written numerals 0 to 9, and add and subtract using numbers up to four. Four-year-olds know some variations of a circle, square, triangle and rectangle. They know days of the week, months, and the seasons, but still cannot tell time. Children are naturally curious about the world and want to find out as much as they can. They want to know what makes the wind blow, how trees grow, why fish have fins, and where turtles go in the winter. But they donââ¬â¢t want adults to give them the answers. They want to be the discoverers, the experimenters, and the theory builders. They donââ¬â¢t want science to be something that is imparted to them; they want it to be something that they do. They want to be scientists; not just consumers of science. They want to ask their own questions, collect their own data, and arrive at new and wonderful ideas. These ââ¬Å"wantsâ⬠should shape the foundation of an early childhood science curriculum. If youââ¬â¢ve ever dripped food coloring into oil before, youââ¬â¢ll remember the beautiful, jewel-like drops of color floating separate in the oil. This is because oil and water truly donââ¬â¢t mix. If you shake them up, they emulsify, but eventually separate back into oil and water. This activity is to teach children about science but at the same time involves math. The ingredients are using edible ingredients, this makes them a safe science activity for children to make on their own! Four-year-olds love to dance, and are able to move rhythmically and smoothly. Their dramatic play is highly imaginative and now has the structure of specific scenarios, like going to the grocery store or rescuing a cat stuck in a tree. By now, 4 year olds can understand basic principles of tone, tempo, genre, pitch, etc. (e.g., can describe which songs are fast and slow or high and low). They can sing complex songs and play an instrument alone as well as with group (e.g., learns newly introduced songs by memory in a day or two). 4 year olds also can use music to reflect thoughts and feelings (e.g., starts buzzing like a bee while looking through a storybook on insects). If taught, children will regard music as a part of daily life (e.g., gets out mat for nap upon hearing soft music being played, puts away toys when clean-up song is sung). Remove the tab and seal the opening with clear packing tape. If you like, make your own cool label for the can. To make the label, cut a piece of paper nine inches long and four and one-half inches wide. Decorate the label with markers or stickers. Tape one side of the label to the can. Then make small rolls of tape and stick them between the label and the can. Wrap the label around the can so that the loose end overlaps the taped end, and tape down the loose end. Put dried beans in the other can, and make a decorated label for that one, too. Try using the rice can for a lighter sound and the bean can for a louder sound. Start shaking! Kids can turn office supplies into sound machines with the activity on the next page. Chapter 7: Art and Creativity Milestone By age 4, many children are learning to better control their hand and wrist movements. They are making forms and objects that are almost, but not quite, recognizable to adults. Circles, lines and crosses are always popular forms. Some 4 year olds may begin naming their drawings. In the middle of drawing, a child may look and say something like, This is a truck, or, This is Mommy. Naming artwork is a big step that shows the child has begun to think in terms of mental pictures. It doesnââ¬â¢t matter that the drawing has little or no resemblance to Mommy. What matters is that the child has discovered that drawing is more than just something physically fun to do. Gradually, some of these forms have taken shape and adults can identify them as people, houses, cars or whatever the young artist intended to draw. Typical drawings at this age are pictures of people consisting of large heads that appear to have arms and legs growing out of them. There is usually little evidence of relative size in these drawings. Tiny legs sprout out of huge heads. A drawing of a butterfly may be twice as big as a dog. Whatever is most important to the child at the time gets the biggest play on the page; what is not important may simply be left out. Thatââ¬â¢s why children may leave out fingers, necks or other body parts. Itââ¬â¢s not that children donââ¬â¢t notice that people have fingers; itââ¬â¢s just that fingers are not important to them at the time they are drawing. During this stage, children may find colors very exciting. Children are not concerned with realistic color representations. They just like to use color. One child may make everything on the page red. Another may use every color in the box on one drawing. Child care providers should not require children to use certain colors or try to read any deep psychological meanings into a childââ¬â¢s choice of colors. Stallones, ââ¬Å"A recent survey by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life revealed that fully eighty-four percent of Americans identify themselves as adherents ofa specific religion. Eighty-eight percent are absolutely or fairly certain of the existence of God or a universal spirit, including fifteen percent of self-identified atheists. Eighty-two percent of the population considers religion to be very or somewhat important in their lives, and seventy-five percent of Americans, including ten percent of atheists, prayed at least once per week. â⬠(p33) This demonstrates how religion is an important entity in the daily lives of many. This is because religions deal with the human life as a whole. For centuries people have searched for the meaning and truth of their own nature and the nature of the universe, religions are the result. We view religions as communities of people who share practices and beliefs, who gather together in special buildings to worship, and ho have a special way of living. More than three-quarters of the worldââ¬â¢s population consider themselves members of some kind of religion. Religion influences almost all aspects of human life. It may have influence in education, marriage, work, and even food. ) The United States was founded on the principles of religion, the citizens of this country can practice whatever religion they like without being persecuted. The liberties provided under the Constitution allow individuals to practice their religious beliets openly and without Judgment. These beliets provide guidance and structure in the lives of these individuals. After the founding of the United States, although the Constitution clearly regulates ââ¬Å" secularismâ⬠, religions in America are always closely intertwined with the process of American history, and play a huge impact on the political, economic, legal and cultural fields. American sociologist Richard Newhouse said, ââ¬Å"A basic fact about the United States is that Americans themselves claim that most of them are Christian and the moral foundations of American society are Jewish-Christian morality Just as non-Christian believe. â⬠(Zhang, 2007, p. 13) (MENG Xianxia/Cross-cultural Communication Vol. 7. No. 2, 2011). There are thousands of religions and thousand more subdivisions of those. Religions are divided mainly into ancient and modern religions. Not to say that the ââ¬Å"modernâ⬠religions Just originated in the past couple years, Just they are still practiced in present times. Some of the ancient religions include Egyptian, Zoroastria, Greek, Norse, and Celtic. (Source and Cite) 3) People have been shunned, ostracized, sacrificed, and killed because of their religious beliefs. These acts take place because individuals have different views. Anderson (2004) noted that these two elements have always posed a dilemma for public education. The struggle is how to accommodate both of these societal characteristics. Religion lies in American family education, school education, political activities and social life, playing a role that cannot be ignored. To have religion thwarting together with education is what gives us history. It is what takes us to the next point in life. It gives us guidance and even sometimes warnings. Introduction There are many signals and signs of community health needs that appear to be difficult to notice for many health professionals. Recognizing community symptoms of disease is an important step in preventing and treating the health conditions of those who need help the most. The Effects of Colonization in Conradââ¬â¢s, Achebeââ¬â¢s and Orwellââ¬â¢s Post-Colonial Works In the late 1800s, third world countries, primarily Africa, were infiltrated by European colonizers. In Things Fall Apart, Heart of Darkness, and ââ¬Å"Shooting an Elephantâ⬠, we see the direct impact of the colonizers on the beliefs of the natives. Post-colonial literature centres mainly around how beliefs are questioned and eventually altered; a transformation that can manifest in numerous ways as it is not fixed. In each of the stories, a different form of colonization is elucidated. In Things Fall Apart, the curiosity of the natives with regards to the culture of the europeans leads to colonization. The oppression of the natives exerted by the europeans in Heart of Darkness leads to colonization as well. Finally, in ââ¬Å"Shooting an Elephantâ⬠, the roles of the colonizers and the colonized are reversed as it is the natives who take on the position of the oppressors . The naà ¯ve villagers of Umuofia in Things Fall Apart discover their resilience when the white men infiltrate their territory like ââ¬Å"locustsâ⬠, subtly presenting their culture to the Ibo people who eventually adopt it as their own. This causes religious conflicts and the natives begin questioning their own beliefs. ââ¬Å"And at last the locusts did descend.
